Glass Recycling Pop-Up
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Glass King, located just outside of Phoenix, AZ, responded to requests from residents for glass recycling options. With the help of the Glass Packaging Institute and Strategic Materials, Inc., Glass King hosted pop-up glass recycling events. Residents were encouraged to bring their glass recyclables including food, beverage, beer, wine, and liquor bottles. In the face of COVID-19, the event offered a drive-thru option to enable physical distancing.
As seen in In Business Phoenix: “GPI is proud to support this innovative effort by GlassKing Recovery & Recycling and Strategic Materials to make glass recycling safe in Phoenix during the COVID-19 response,” said Scott DeFife, President of the Glass Packaging Institute. “Recycled glass is a critical element in the making of new glass bottles, and in keeping the food and beverage packaging supply chain going, which is essential during this crisis. This partnership provides a blueprint for how local communities can respond to challenges that COVID-19 has brought to recycling, and to increase the amount of sustainable glass containers that are recovered in the state. We hope that Arizonans take advantage of this special event and keep recycling their glass while adhering to public health guidance and practicing social distancing.”
The event ran for 15 days and collected 30 tons of glass for recycling.
